Metadata and Taxonomy Overview
Assigning metadata to files is a method of classifying content that uses custom taxonomy.
Configuring Taxonomy
Use the Taxonomy interface in the Dashboard to configure taxonomy and create taxonomy terms. You'll use this custom taxonomy to configure your metadata.

Metadata and Taxonomy Overview

Assigning metadata to files is a method of classifying content that uses custom taxonomy.

Think of metadata as a label or tag you can assign to files to classify them. Metadata is structured using taxonomy. So, before you can assign metadata to your files, you’ll need to create a custom taxonomy for your content. For more information, see Configuring Taxonomy.

Configuring Taxonomy

Use the Taxonomy interface in the Dashboard to configure taxonomy and create taxonomy terms. You’ll use this custom taxonomy to configure your metadata.

  1. In the Dashboard interface, click Taxonomy .

    Expected Result
    The Taxonomy interface displays.

  2. Click New Taxonomy .

    Expected Result
    The New Taxonomy window displays.
  3. Enter a label for the taxonomy term.
  4. Click Save.

    Expected Result
    A taxonomy is created.
  5. Select the taxonomy.

    Expected Result
    The Edit Taxonomy screen displays.
  6. Click Unnamed 1 to modify the taxonomy term.

    Expected Result
    The Label and Name fields for Unnamed 1 display.
  7. Enter a new label for the taxonomy term.
  8. Click Save.
  9. To create more taxonomy terms, do any of the following:

    1. To insert a new taxonomy term below the selected term, right-click the term and select Create Term Below .
    2. To insert a child term below the selected term, right-click the term and select Create Narrower Term .
    Expected Result
    A new term is created and named Unnamed 2.
  10. Enter a label for the taxonomy term.
  11. Click Save.
  12. Create additional taxonomy terms.
  13. Click Save all changes.

A taxonomy and its terms are created. You’re ready to start Configuring Metadata.

Deleting Taxonomy

Delete taxonomy structures that you no longer need.
Note:You must be an Administrator to access the Administration interface.

  1. In the Dashboard interface, click Taxonomy .

    Expected Result
    The Taxonomy interface displays.

  2. Click the X beside the taxonomy you want to delete.

The taxonomy strcuture is deleted.

Configuring Metadata

Use the Metadata interface of the Dashboard to configure user-defined metadata.
Note:You must be an Administrator to access the Administration interface.

  1. In the Dashboard interface, click Metadata .

    Expected Result
    The Metadata interface displays.

  2. In the Category Name field, enter a name for the category.

  3. Click Add Category .

    Expected Result
    A Category section is added.
  4. Complete the following fields:

    1. Enter a Label. This is a label for the metadata category. It displays when applying or filtering metadata.
    2. Select a Type. In easyDITA, all metadata is built off taxonomy. 
    3. Select a Value range. These are the taxonomy terms you want to connect to your metadata category.
  5. (Optional) To enable search filtering using metadata, check Search facet . Filters TabContent Manager
  6. (Optional) To enable the metadata so you can assign it to files, check Enabled . Properties TabResource Viewer
  7. Click Save Changes.

A user-defined metadata value is configured.

Assigning Metadata to Files

Use the Properties Tab in the Resource Viewer to assign metadata to files.

Note:Ensure metadata values exist and are enabled in the Administration section of the Dashboard interface.
  1. In the Content Manager, right-click a file and select Properties .

    Expected Result
    The Properties Tab in the Resource Viewer displays.

  2. In the Set value field, select the metadata value.

  3. Click Save Changes.

You have assigned metadata to the file. You can view other files that have metadata assigned to them using the Filters tab in the Content Manager.

Deleting a Metadata Category

Delete metadata in easyDITA that you no longer need.
Note:You must be an Administrator to access the Administration interface.

  1. In the Dashboard interface, click Metadata .

    Expected Result
    The Metadata interface displays.

  2. Click Delete.

    Expected Result
    The Delete category window displays.
  3. Click DELETE.

The metadata category is deleted.
